Why I Write

I have been writing for as long as I can remember, probably as long as I have been able to hold pen to paper. It was the way in which I communicated; long flourishing letters delivered by small hands to whomever would read them. In fact, I venture to say that I wrote long before I ever had a voice.

I was a quiet child growing up, well… most of the time. In school I was quiet all of the time. I know that I have told this story before but it bears repeating;

My senior year in high school my consumer education teacher decided, on the very last day of school, to ask us, the entire class, 20 questions about us, the entire class. One of the questions she asked was “Who is the quietest student in the class?” Another student, in fact the most popular girl in school said my name. Now granted, I could not believe she even knew my name much less had no problems in speaking it but I was mortified when my teacher, who had known me all year blurted out her response, “Who?”

Commence burying face in to hands. But as you can tell, I was quiet. So what does one do when once spends the majority of the time in quiet contemplation. I say contemplation rather sarcastically since it was mostly fear of being further outcast by opening my mouth.

Case in point, my first day of high school sitting at lunch my “friends” at the time were talking about the new phenomenon of hotness that was New Kids on the Block, or NKOTB as they were known, at which point I threw in my 2 cent conversational piece “Hey, did you hear that Iriving Berlin died? It’s so sad”. The entire table went silent and glared at me as one girl said, “who the hell is that?” Needless to say the next day I was the only one sitting at that section of the table.

Back to why I write. As I said, I’ve written ever since I was able to hold a pen to paper. In a lifetime of being outcast, I spent an inordinate amount of time with pen to paper, multitudes of paper in fact. Spirals and spirals filled with prose and poems, some of which I was able to get published but many of which just revealed my Hamlet-like strife and turmoil. Those spirals were tossed out in a great fit of despair many, many years ago however, and as I do not nor have I ever kept a journal, I wish I had kept those as they were perhaps the most reflective of my tumultuous life.

Today it is fashionable to have blogs and what not and while my blogging lives little to be desired I have found my solace in status updates, tweets and the occasional tumblr moment.

There are many people who mourn the lack of direct communication between human beings, the talking face to face. They bemoan the fact that too many people text or email instead of just picking up the phone and calling. But there was a time when writing was, in fact, the “raison d’etre”. Letter writing was especially prominent and one longed to send and receive them. Granted, that has fallen by the wayside but for people like me who long to express their moods and opinions in the written word, blogging, tweeting, facebooking and even texting satisfy this most mercurial of art forms.

So while I understand your need for face to face conversation or need for a human voice over the phone, please learn to tolerate my penchant for writing as it has served me well throughout my life. It has enabled me to express my soul where my voice has failed me.
